Boiler Relief Valve Discharging — Causes and Safe Checks
A safety relief valve that discharges — a drip at the outlet pipe, or a full opening with hot water and steam — is never a minor maintenance detail. This device is the last line of defence against overpressure in the circuit: if it opens, either pressure genuinely exceeded the valve’s set point, or the valve no longer reseats. Either way, the boiler is operating outside its normal conditions and the installation needs attention right away.
Why does a safety relief valve start discharging?
The most common causes come down to how the system handles water expanding as it heats. An expansion tank that has lost its air cushion — ruptured bladder, waterlogged tank — can no longer absorb that expansion: pressure climbs on every temperature rise until the opening threshold is reached. A fill pressure-reducing valve that no longer closes, often because of deposits on its seat, does the opposite: it feeds water continuously and lets working pressure drift upward. Control-side causes follow: a temperature or pressure limit misadjusted or faulty, an aquastat that fails to cut out, or a piping arrangement that adds pump head to the fill pressure. Finally, the safety relief valve may simply be at end of life: a fouled or corroded seat leaks permanently after a first opening, even once pressure has come back down.
What can be checked safely?
Without touching gas, the valve or the safety devices: record the pressure shown on the gauge when cold and at end of cycle, to quantify the drift; note the set point stamped on the valve’s nameplate and pass it to the technician; observe whether the discharge is continuous or only at the end of a firing cycle (a useful clue to tell a waterlogged tank from a leaking fill valve); and confirm the discharge pipe stays clear with nobody standing nearby. Never operate a relief valve’s test lever on a system that is over pressure, and never try to stop the leak by tightening or capping it.

Any repeated or continuous discharge warrants prompt service, as does pressure that stays high after demand stops, or steam at the discharge point.
