A refrigerant leak is the silent cause behind many commercial air-conditioning failures: performance degrades slowly, the compressor compensates by working harder, then the system gives out exactly when it is needed most. It is also a regulatory and environmental issue — halocarbons are potent greenhouse gases whose handling is regulated.
What are the warning signs of a refrigerant leak?
The most reliable sign is a gradual loss of capacity: the unit still cools, but less and less, with ever-longer cycles. Add to that frost on lines or coil (a low charge drops the evaporating temperature), oil traces at fittings — escaping refrigerant carries compressor oil with it —, hissing near the circuit, or a detector alarm in the mechanical room.
What should you do while waiting for the intervention?
If a detector is in alarm or an unusual smell is noticeable in a closed room: ventilate, restrict access and report the situation — refrigerants displace oxygen in confined spaces. Otherwise, reduce the load on the unit (raised setpoint, non-critical zones shed) to spare the compressor. Do not attempt a recharge or tighten fittings: handling halocarbons requires specific qualifications.
