In Québec, a large share of mid-winter “no heat” calls have nothing to do with the boiler itself: it is the vent or the air intake that is blocked. Wind-driven snow, ice built up around the termination, frost, debris — the appliance can no longer confirm flue gas flow and goes into safety lockout before ignition. Why does a blocked vent trigger a safety lockout?
Gas boilers and appliances with forced venting verify, at every start, that the fan is establishing flow in the vent. That confirmation runs through a pressure switch: without a correct signal, the ignition sequence is blocked and the appliance locks out. A partial restriction is trickier than a complete blockage — the unit may start, then shut down mid-cycle, or run with degraded combustion. What blocks a termination in winter?
The most common causes in a Québec climate: accumulated or drifting snow against the wall, particularly where mechanical snow clearing pushes snow to the base of the façade; ice formed by the plume of a condensing appliance, whose water vapour refreezes around the outlet and gradually narrows it; frost on an intake screen; and, outside the cold season, leaves, insect or bird nests in a termination nobody watches. A termination installed too low for the expected snow depth, or set in a recess, will block again with every episode. What can be checked safely?
From outside, with no tools: locate both terminations (exhaust and air intake, often side by side) and look for snow, ice or debris blocking them. Clearing an obvious, accessible build-up by hand is acceptable; do not push anything into the vent, do not chip ice off the termination with a tool, do not remove a screen. Indoors, record the code or indicator light shown on the controller to pass on to the technician, and note where in the cycle the appliance cuts out. Do not reset repeatedly and do not defeat any safety device. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, an unusual odour is present, or occupants feel unwell, evacuate and call 911 before any diagnosis.
How can the risk be reduced during the cold season?
