Low Water Cutoff

A safety device that monitors boiler water level and shuts off the burner as soon as that level falls below the point considered safe.

What is a low water cutoff?

A low water cutoff is the device responsible for confirming that a boiler still holds enough water to fire safely. It monitors the level continuously and, as soon as the level drops below a defined point, it removes the call for heat sent to the burner. The abbreviation LWCO is used almost universally in the trade.

The reason comes down to how a boiler sheds heat: the heating surfaces pass it to the water around them. Take the water away and that heat stays in the metal, temperature rises fast, and the appliance can distort, crack or fail outright. This safety protects the integrity of the equipment itself, not a comfort setpoint.

Float type or probe type

Two families are in service. The float type houses a float in a chamber piped to the boiler, and its downward travel opens a mechanical contact. It is blown down on a routine to clear the sludge that would otherwise restrict that travel. The probe type senses water through conductivity between an electrode and the vessel wall: fewer moving parts, but a genuine sensitivity to fouling and water chemistry.

On a steam boiler, the cutoff is often combined with the feedwater control, which calls for makeup water before the safety point is ever reached. The two functions remain distinct: one holds the working level, the other protects the appliance when that level is no longer being held.

Primary and auxiliary devices

Many installations carry two stages of protection: a primary cutoff that stops firing at a first level, then an auxiliary device set lower that acts if the primary did not. That second stage is commonly manual reset, precisely so the boiler cannot quietly restart after an event that needs to be understood before it is cleared.

Fouling, testing and maintenance

The most common cause of failure is not electrical but chemical: sludge, scale and deposits eventually restrict a float or insulate a probe, and a fouled device can “see” water where none remains. That is the direct link between this safety and boiler water treatment.

Periodic testing — creating the low water condition and confirming that firing genuinely stops — is the only way to know the device still works. Its frequency, method and record keeping come from the manufacturer’s documentation and the requirements applying to the appliance; like checking pressure switches or the burner’s safety devices, it belongs to a documented preventive maintenance program rather than to whatever gets noticed during a call.
