Gas Train
The ordered set of valves, regulators and safety devices that feeds gas to a burner and shuts that supply off on demand.
What is a gas train?
A gas train is the ordered sequence of components installed between the building’s gas supply and the gas burner itself. Each element has a defined job: isolating the appliance, filtering the fuel, bringing the pressure down to the value the burner expects, monitoring that pressure, and cutting the supply when the safety chain calls for it.
Why is it central to installation safety?
A gas train works on permission logic: fuel only reaches the flame when every monitored condition is satisfied. Gas pressure switches confirm that pressure stays within the acceptable band, and the automatic shutoff valves close as soon as a parameter leaves its setpoint or the flame controller loses detection. In Québec, natural gas and propane piping and appliances fall under the CSA B149.1 installation code, enforced by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec, and each burner’s certified assembly adds its own requirements on top.
How is a gas train maintained?
It is one of the standard checkpoints of a burner service: tightness, filtration, regulated pressures, and confirmation that the safety devices actually trip. On a modulating burner, the device metering the gas flow — often a control valve driven by the controller — is verified alongside the air-fuel ratio. Nothing on a gas train should be adjusted or replaced on a hunch: this work belongs to a qualified gas contractor, with the right instruments and the manufacturer’s documentation at hand.
